Pretty Little Liars is an American mystery teen drama television series created by Marlene King. Based on the popular series of novels written by Sara Shepard, the show premiered on June 8, 2010 on ABC Family. The series follows the lives of Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale), Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario), Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) and Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell), four girls whose clique falls apart after the disappearance of their queen bee, Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse). One year later, they begin receiving messages from a mysterious figure using the name "A" who threatens to expose their secrets — including long-hidden ones they thought only Alison knew.
After an initial order of 10 episodes, on June 28, 2010, ABC Family ordered an additional 12 episodes for season one. These episodes began airing on January 3, 2011. The ratings success of the first 10 episodes prompted the book series to be extended beyond the initial eight novels. On January 10, ABC Family renewed the series for a second season.
Aria, Spencer, Emily, and Hanna were a group of high school girls brought together by the very outgoing Alison. All is well until Alison mysteriously disappears. The girls part ways until a year later when Alison's body is found buried within the gates of her own home. The girls are suddenly all brought together once again, and even before attending Alison's funeral, they begin to get horrifying messages from a stalker known as 'A'. 'A' threatens to tell secrets from the past and present to the people that matter most to the girls, if the girls don't do what 'A' says. The girls all have secrets that could potentially ruin their lives. Aria's secret is the relationship with her new attractive English teacher, Ezra Fitz. Spencer kissed her sister Melissa's boyfriend, Ian, and then also ended up kissing her sister's ex fiancé, Wren. Emily is a closeted lesbian with an attraction for her friend, Maya. Hanna's mother struggles to keep up with money, and Hanna rebels by shoplifting and destroying her boyfriend's car. The girls attempt to discover the true identity of 'A', but they encounter two people from their past, Toby Cavanaugh and his stepsister, Jenna Marshall. Jenna was blinded by one of Alison's pranks, and Toby took the blame and was sent to reform school. The girls continue to look for clues to help them discover the true identity of 'A', which brings them closer to danger.
